Reasons Behind Committing Crimes

There are a lot of different theories on why people commit crime. Classical, biological, conflict, sociological, critical are the main theories that have been seen as the most reasonable. I mostly lean towards the ideas of the fact that people choose to commit because of social structure or it stems from the background of the person. For example, a place like East Chicago is known for the high poverty rate which is connected to the high crime rate in youth mostly. Closer to home is East Vancouver which is regarded as a sketchy area. Crime is very common there as most of those living there come from a rough and poor background. When a kid grows up in a rough situation then they're perspective on the lines between good and bad will be different than someone of wealth. If role models in a kids life are making bad decisions then that has a good chance to rub off on the child. This can be somewhat related to social structure effecting somebodies decision toward crime. It is connected through the fact that a lot of poor families go through institutions that have bad influences. For instance if a kid goes to a school with a lot of friends that use recreational drugs, the youth will have a lot of chances and influence to use them as well. If the same kid were to go to a wealthier school with richer kids then the same influences may not occur.

On August 28 this year, a woman named Carmen Chamblee lit a car on fire because she thought it belonged to her ex boyfriend. It was not in fact his car and she was later charged with second degree arson. She lived in Clearwater, BC. The reasons behind this act must have something to do with her background as it shows serious rage and or a grudge. She obviously wasn't able to deal with the stress of a breakup and took it out on "his car". I personally believe she had a childhood trauma of some sort because of the inability to deal with emotional pain. It takes serious rage to light someones car on fire. It would make sense if this crime fell back into biological issues and brain chemistry. Of course we have no idea what the male did to make her this mad but we make the assumption it was not extreme.

  1. Thanks for the post. So social structure and social learning (socialization) theories influence your thoughts here. If that's the case then do you think Carmen Chamblee learned her beahviour in youth and then continued this pattern? Look at Chapter 9 in the CRIM text...does she fit the pattern for the GTC or Control Balance Theory? Regardless nice job here
