Robert William Pickton
Robert Pickton was born in 1949 and was a pig farmer in Port Coquitlam. He was arrested in 2002 for first degree murder of 43 women and charged for second degree murder for 6 women. Majority of these victims were younger prostitutes or drug users in the east side of Vancouver. He has been sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole until after 25 years. He started to get lazy with his operations and police got a warrant for illegal firearms before finding his victims in the farm. For the reasons behind why he committed all these actions against the women would have to go back to something like mental instability. A good description is like how if we were to play a video game and kill a whole bunch of online friends. When you do that they debate the first couple of kills but after they realize they could be caught or killed then they become desensitized. Once Pickton got to about 5 or 6 murders I think he knew that it didn't matter how much he did so he kept going. He also could be a power or control serial killer which would mean he commits these acts because of a lack of social mastery, personal mastery or to get a felt sense of gratification.
I'm not sure how much we can learn from this because of the fact that it was very difficult for the police to learn about his actions right away. For the women working from east Vancouver doing that type of business, there really is not as much watch and witnesses as other places. Some of the victims may not have been in a family living style therefor there is nobody to instantly warn the police of their absence. To help this problem there could be more security in that area because of how unstable and unsafe it is. The only way to stop that type of victimization is before it happens because there would be no way of finding these crimes at a home. It's possible to stop crimes like these but it would mean a lot more patrolling of poor neighborhoods like downtown east van. But to this day it still does not seem to be the biggest concern to the police of government.
